Organizational Taboos in Business Organizations : An Exploratory Study |

Abstract : In anthropology, taboo is referred to things that are holy/untouchable and the conventional prohibitions. Some early taboos in businesses resulted from its owners’ accumulations of experiences; others were due to traditional customs to avoid bad luck or to obtain blessings. This study tried to explore organizational taboos in business organizations. The researcher interviewed thirty respondents, including both managers and first-line workers. Seven topics were found in the interviews: folk taboos, moral norms, managerial regulations, technological and business secrets, authority and social relations, communication and emotional expressions, competition and cooperation. The author suggests that, organizational taboo is referred to a behavioral expectation specifying how organizational members should not behave in given circumstances. The sources of behavioral prohibitions for business members include: human being’s belief systems and cosmology; the espoused values in the society; conventions and reciprocity in a interpersonal interaction; managerial regulations; etc. In management, businesses choose to incorporate taboos that can both boost their operating efficiency and at the same time acquire their goal of organizational control. |
